RAF English Electric Canberra, Carn an t-Sagairt Mor, crash date 22/11/56. [Picture from wikipedia.org] This wreckage is located over a wide area near the flat summit plateau of the 1047m munro Carn an t-Sagairt Mor. The amount of wreckage is substantial, with large pieces of the wings and fuselage easily observable. These pictures were taken in August 2004. I missed one of the large jet engines, which is pictured on the TFDACSS website here. Missing such a large and apparently obvious piece of wreckage as this merely underlines the point about the difficulty of locating any sort of item in the seemingly endless expanse of the Scottish Mountains (even though, on a global scale, these mountains do not actually cover that large an area). What is needed is a detailed guide to the extent of wreckage sites, with coordinates obtained using a GPS receiver. There are more photographs of this site on the SAWS website here. |
