Glen Feshie

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, May 6 2008.

Yesterday I went for a long trip (about 36km round-trip) along the length of Glen Feshie in the Cairngorms. From Tolvah I cycled along the good tarmac road to Carnachuin (great views of Carn Ban Mor and Coire Garbhlach), crossed a bridge over the river Feshie (which looks like it might fall down very soon),… Read more »

Easter Ross

Last weekend Lesley and I went to Strathpeffer in Easter Ross, staying at the Ben Wyvis Hotel (which I can’t really recommend; it’s large, spooky, very old-fashioned and reminds me of the hotel in The Shining). You can see Ben Wyvis from the hotel, but the view from our room was of another wall of… Read more »

Glen Shiel

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, February 21 2008.

I spent last weekend walking in Glen Shiel and did 4 Munro summits; Sgurr nan Conbhairean and Carn Ghlusaid on the Saturday and Creag a’Mhaim and Druim Shionnach on the Sunday. The latter are at the eastern end of the South Glen Shiel ridge which I walked on previously in 1996, but inexplicably I missed… Read more »

Stupendous winter day on Ben Vrackie

On Saturday last weekend I walked to the 841m summit of Ben Vrackie near Pitlochry. It was a perfect winter day for hillwaking with still air and crisp clear skies. The temperature was -6C at my car as I started the walk, and there was snow all the way, deepening considerably as I got higher… Read more »

An ideal winter mountain hike in Lochaber

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, December 21 2007.

Yesterday I had a great day walking in Lochaber. I was walking in the hills west of Loch Lochy, just north of Fort William. Totally blue skies, light winds, almost no snowpatches and ground frozen firmly made for very good walking conditions. It was very cold though – my car thermometer was reading -7 degrees… Read more »

Ben Lui and an aircraft wreckage site

Posted by & filed under Military/Aircraft, Mountains & hills, October 15 2007.

On Saturday I walked to the 1130m summit of Ben Lui (or Laoigh) near Tyndrum. This is a summit I’ve been to twice before, and despite its height, the usual route from the A85 in Glen Lochy is a relatively straightforward climb. The difficulties are actually all low down on the mountain, where the River… Read more »

Skye

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, Travel, October 8 2007.

Last weekend Lesley and I went to Skye for a short trip. We visited Talisker Bay and Glen Brittle, and spent the Saturday evening eating and drinking in Portree. Highlight of the trip was a boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk, in the heart of the Cuillin mountains.
