Assynt

The weekend before last, Lesley and I travelled to the north-west of Scotland. We spent the first night in Plockton, and I had excellent langoustines and venison pie for dinner in the Plockton Inn. The next day we drove up to Assynt and went for short walks near Clachtoll and Achmelvich beach. The second night… Read more »

Berlin

Posted by & filed under Travel, February 25 2009.

Last weekend Lesley and I went to Berlin for a short trip. Neither of us had been there before so it was a first for both of us. The weather was pretty bad, with lots of snow and later rain, so walking about the streets looking at the sights wasn’t as much fun as it… Read more »

The Atlas Mountains

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, Travel, February 9 2009.

Last week I went to Morocco to spend 3 days in the Atlas Mountains, on a tour organised by Epic Morocco. My aim was to get to the 4167m summit of Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, which would have been the highest I’d ever been, but I didn’t make it.

The West Country and Amsterdam

At the start of this month, Lesley and I went on a trip to the West Country (Bristol, Bath, Portishead and Clevedon). Then we went to Amsterdam for a few days (second visit for me, see my previous blog posting ‘Amsterdam‘). Lesley has written great blog entries about the trips here and here, so no… Read more »

Mull

Lesley and I spent last weekend on the island of Mull, staying in Tobermory. On the Saturday I walked up Ben More (whilst Lesley went to the island of Iona), which is the highest summit on the island, and the only munro summit that you need to catch a ferry from the Scottish mainland to… Read more »

Puig Carlit, eastern Pyrenees

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, Travel, June 12 2008.

While on holiday in the South of France, I drove to the Pyrenees to try and climb the summit of Puig Carlit. At 2921m, Puig Carlit is not one of the major summits of the Pyrenees mountain chain (the highest is Pico d’Aneto at 3404m) but it is the highest in this particular region.

South of France

Lesley and I have just returned from a week’s holiday in the South of France, to Roussillon (the Catalan region of France). We flew from Edinburgh to Toulouse with Jet2, who are a budget airline but the flight was fine.

Easter Ross

Posted by & filed under Military/Aircraft, Mountains & hills, Travel, February 28 2008.

Last weekend Lesley and I went to Strathpeffer in Easter Ross, staying at the Ben Wyvis Hotel (which I can’t really recommend; it’s large, spooky, very old-fashioned and reminds me of the hotel in The Shining). You can see Ben Wyvis from the hotel, but the view from our room was of another wall of… Read more »

Skye

Posted by & filed under Mountains & hills, Travel, October 8 2007.

Last weekend Lesley and I went to Skye for a short trip. We visited Talisker Bay and Glen Brittle, and spent the Saturday evening eating and drinking in Portree. Highlight of the trip was a boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk, in the heart of the Cuillin mountains.
