John & Meryl 1947. You can see the layout behind us. There were five prefabs in each row, all semi-detached. Meryl lived four doors down from us for a while - her second name is Rogers. You can see there are no fences up yet. Look how narrow the street was.
John & Anne. Not sure of the date -around 1950 I think. Ann Taylor
was a family friend. You can see the pub behind us. There was also a wee garage/workshop
beside and behind the pub which burnt down one night. I remember someone throwing the
books into the fire!! The corner of the prefab is where Lucky Shearer used to live.
Early 1954. The Anderson Shelter is the garden shed now. You can see
the coal hole in the back of the prefab and the vents for the larder above it.
John & Drew 1953. My pal Drew Donaldson lived over the back and down one and we are seen here with my new brother Alan. You can see the number 179 beside the front door. The steel windows warped and were freezing in the winter! John&Alan.
John & John & Alan. Early 1954. The fences are up by this time and you can clearly see the back of the prefabs behind us.
John & Pal. Me and my wee dog. You can see the sealing tape along the walls and the concrete pillar at the corner. Used to get black mould on the walls if the tape or the corners leaked. Mind you they did have a inside toilet! The dog was run over by a lorry just outside the pub at the top of the hill
Burn Terrace. My Granny and Grampa used to live at number 10 Burn Terrace (just off the Duke's Road) and again you can see the Anderson Shelter as the garden shed. A few bombs fell just along the road so maybe it served its purpose. The house across the back belonged to Sam Tait's Granny and Grampa. He went to Hallside in the same year as I did but died of Glandular Fever when he was nine years old - I'll bet not too many people still remember him.
