My grandparents were William and Elizabeth Mulholland who lived in Newton. William was killed in action in 1917.

3/6277 Lance Corporal, THE QUEEN'S OWN CAMERON HIGHLANDERS 6th Bn, Killed Tuesday 3 July 1917. Battle of Ypres 1917, Born Dreghorn Ayrshire. Lived at Montgomery Place Newton. Name on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

I was just reading a letter he had sent to my granny just a few days before he was killed and I have the letter my granny got informing her of his death.

Mulholland is a fairly common name in this area. Both my grandparents came to Cambuslang from Ayrshire. My grandfather's family originally came from Northern Ireland. Like so many others they came to Lanarkshire for the pits. My grandfather was a groom and worked with the pit ponies.

My granny was the hero. She raised 4 children by working in the brickworks so she could stay in the tied house belonging to the mine owner. She remarried 6 years later and raised another 4 children. She was remarkable, just got on with her life and never put up with any nonsense.
