I've attached some photos which you can use as you see fit. We lived at no. 5 Arnhem St
in The Prefabs at Halfway from 1947/48 until 1959 when we moved to Hamilton. I've attached
three photos of the prefabs; the first shows a general view from our back door looking
over Castle Drive to Hallside Steelworks in the background; the next is a view of South
St, which was a cul de sac which led off from Arnhem St just opposite our house so it
became a (very safe) play street for a huge gang of kids who lived in South St, Arnhem St
and Mill Rd; the third is a photo of our house with my father's car parked outside it.
Actually it was his company's car; he was called George Slater and at that time he worked
as a Sales Rep for Odham's Press. The car was a Ford Anglia and we thought we were helluva
posh when he got it!
I was very surprised the last time I looked at your website to see some photos posted by
Theresa Mulligan from Australia. The Mulligans were our next door neighbours at No. 7
Arnhem St. and I remember both Theresa and her brother Johnnie very well. Her text refers
to Declan Keenan in one of the St Bride's school photos and I remember him too. He lived
in South St at the end of the cul de sac and I think he got a job as a delivery boy with
one of the grocers in Cambuslang then went on to work on the railways (he was a bit older
than me) but I can't really be sure about that.
The next photo is the Hallside school class photo which appeared in Scottish Memories.
Now, I can't be sure exactly when this was taken but judging by the age we all look, I
think it must have been either my first or my second year at Hallside which would put it
in either 1951 or perhaps 1952. I can put some names to faces but not many because it was
a very long time ago, but here goes:
Back row Left to right - John Tait /don't know /John Aitken (who lived in South St)/ don't
know/don't know/don't know
Middle row L to R - Tom Wilson, then don't know until second last, Alan Cairns (who lived
in Hallside Village) then me
Girls row L to R don't know/ Jackaline Brown/don't know/Betty Henderson/ Margaret
Landies/don't know/don't know/Sheena Mclellan (I think) then don't know the rest of the
row
Front row Lto R Alex Cooper/ Nelson Somebody I think (or maybe Somebody Nelson) then don't
know the rest of the row.
It's really sad how you lose contact and memories of people. I spent seven years with most
of the people in this photo and I can name only nine of them.
The last photo is my Grandfather outside one of the Cambuslang Coop Grocery stores with
his staff. He is in the middle of the group and his name was William (Bill) Cameron. The
photo dates from 1928 so the shop is not the Central Grocery of which he was the manager
in the fifties but one of the other shops in Cambuslang, maybe Eastfield or Kirkhill or
Silverbanks all of which he managed on his way up the ladder to the Central Grocery. At
this distance I have no way of knowing. He was quite a well-known figure in the town in
the fifties and was President of Cambuslang Bowling Club one year, maybe 1952 from what I
can remember.
