Annie Marr
My father and his family came from Clydesdale Road and were named McVey. My aunt
married a McKenna and lived on Main Street all her life. She managed the Co-op in
Cambuslang.
My father was John McVey born in 1922 and went to St Brides School. He served as a Chindit
in the war and was one of the forgotten army. His father Was a miner called Frank Mcvey,
he married a Flora Elliot in about 1913. They had nine children in all.
My grandparents later moved to Glenburn Avenue (would that be right??) My grandfather
was a coalminer all his life, my Aunt Mary a nurse in Glasgow until she emigrated to
Australia. She and her
Sister, my Aunt Jessie, had a double wedding in St Brides. Aunt Jessie married Jimmy
Mullane and spent most of her life in a flat above the shops in Main Street. We stayed
with her
Many times. Aunt Mary married Jimmy McKenna. My uncle Charlie lived in East Kilbride
having spent many years in an institution following a fall, my uncle jimmy lived in
Rutherglen with his wife, uncle Gerald lives in Wiltshire. There was an Uncle Frank McVey
I met once or twice and also an Uncle Alec.
Dad told my sister and me many stories of his youth, of stealing tumpsies (is that the
right word) and being chased by the local farmer. Was Cambuslang much more rural then? I
guess most places were. He talked of his mother tossing a piece out of the
windae on wash-days. I think Flora McVey must have been quite a formidable lady.
I loved seeing your pictures and reading your contributions. Dad died in 1984, only 62. He
loved Cambuslang, hated the horror of fighting in the Far East and he told us many stories
of his youth and his family struggles. I think the boys Must have been a handful. Dad was
a choirboy at St Brides and spoke good latin.
My Grandfather Francis McVey who lived his life in Cambuslang. He was a Lovat Scout in the First World War. His father was Francis McVey who was a hammerman, and his mother Mary (nee Hannahan).
My grandmother Flora McVey {nee Elliot} in about 1915. Before she was married she lived 8 Silverbanks Street. Her father was Charles Elliot who was a coal miner and her mother Jessie (nee Boyd). They may have had blantyre connections
My Grandfather and Grandmother with their eldest child Jessie c 1915
My father in 1939 (aged 17) he became a Chindit in the Second World War. Was born in Cambuslang 26th February 1922 and he was baptised by Father McGuiness. He was an Altar Boy at St Brides.
My Grandfather and grandmother at Glenburn Avenue, they also lived at 4 Clydeford Road.
Grandad was a miner. They had nine children, one died very young. They are both buried at
Westburn Cemetery.
My Aunts' Mary and Jessie McVey had a double wedding at St Brides. Jessie became Mrs James Mullane and she worked at the Co Op in Cambuslang. Aunt Mary became Mrs Mary McKenna and was a nurse in Glasgow, she later emigrated to Australia. Aunty Jessie lived above the shops of Main Street and her husband worked on the railways, he used to be a very good artist. My Aunt Mary was called Mary Hannahan Mcvey, after a great grandmother.
